Argument Mining: A Survey (2019)
John Lawrence & Chris Reed
Computational Linguistics, 45 (4), pp765-818

Argument Mining is the automatic identification and extraction of the structure of inference and reasoning expressed as arguments presented in natural language. Understanding argumentative structure makes it possible to determine not only what positions people are adopting, but also why they hold the opinions they do, providing valuable insights in domains as diverse as financial market prediction and public relations. This paper explores the techniques that establish the foundations for argument mining, provides a review of recent advances in argument mining techniques, and discusses the challenges faced in automatically extracting a deeper understanding of reasoning expressed in language in general.

Editorial Office for the Journal, Argument & Computation

Argument in AI has had a dedicated workshop series in CMNA since 2001; argument in MAS has had its own forum, ArgMAS since 2004. The community as a whole has had the COMMA conference series since 2006. But folk have had to publish in an enormous variety of journals, often through special issues dedicated to argumentation. Finally, a new journal was established to support the growing community. From 2010 to 2016 it was published by Taylor and Francis, who have a strong track record in both humanities and sciences, and have worked with interdisciplinary areas such as ours before. Reed is, with Grasso, Rahwan and Simari, a founding editor of the journal and the editorial office was hosted at ARG-tech. In 2016, the journal’s founding team handed over to a new editorial team in conjunction with a change of publisher, with current information available at IOS Press’ site for the journal.
